The occurrence of several large outbreaks of highly contagious and serious influenza such as avian flu, SARS, and lately H1N1 has raised international concern of a new influenza virus with potential to emerge and become pandemic. WHO is responding in many areas including prevention and control of these acute respiratory diseases (ARDs).

Acute respiratory diseases (ARDs) are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality from infectious disease in the world. ARDs are also among the most frequent reasons for consulting a health-care worker or being admitted to a health-care facility.
